Job Overview
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Structure: Detached residential home with rear deck
Problem: Skunk burrowing activity beneath deck
Service: Humane skunk removal with trenching and exclusion
Visits: 2
Summary
Our team completed a two-visit skunk removal service at a residential property in Burlington after the homeowner reported burrowing activity beneath a rear deck. The work involved inspection, humane eviction using a one-way door, full perimeter trenching, and final confirmation that no further activity was present.
Background / Property Context
The property is a large residential home with a raised back deck constructed with vertical wood skirting. The deck perimeter bordered lawn and landscaped areas, creating sheltered conditions suitable for wildlife denning near the foundation line.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported ongoing skunk activity on the property and identified a burrow beneath the deck. There was concern about continued digging, odour, and the risk of the animal remaining or returning under the structure.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial inspection, disturbed soil and visible excavation were observed along the base of the deck skirting. Voids beneath the deck edge were consistent with skunk denning behaviour. No other wildlife entry points were identified at that time.
Cause Analysis
Skunks commonly den beneath decks where soil is soft and cover is provided by enclosed structures. The deck skirting allowed access at ground level, and the surrounding lawn made excavation easier. These conditions created a suitable denning location close to shelter and food sources.
Treatment / Removal
On the first visit, the area was prepared for trenching and humane eviction. A one-way door was installed at the identified entry point to allow the skunk to exit while preventing re-entry. All work was completed using non-lethal, humane wildlife control methods. The service was carried out by our technician, Shaohua.
Exclusion & Repairs
A trench approximately one foot deep and six inches outward was dug along the exposed section of the deck perimeter. Galvanized steel mesh was securely attached to the deck skirting, extended into the trench, and buried to create a permanent underground barrier. Soil was temporarily left open to allow the animal to vacate fully before final sealing.

Outcome & Confirmation
At the second visit, the homeowner reported no further skunk activity on the property. The one-way door was removed, the trench was sealed, and the mesh exclusion was fully backfilled. A final inspection confirmed that the deck perimeter was secured and no additional wildlife activity was present.
Technician Notes
- Trenching and mesh installation followed standard skunk exclusion specifications
- One-way door functioned as intended with no signs of re-entry
- Final visit confirmed successful eviction and completed exclusion
- No further activity reported after completion
