Job Overview
Location: Burlington, Ontario
Structure: Two-storey detached house with brick base and upper siding
Problem: Rats observed on the exterior of the property
Service: Exterior rat control and inspection
Visits: 2
Summary
Our team completed a two-visit exterior rat control service at a residential property in Burlington. Active rat movement was confirmed around the yard and foundation areas. Exterior population control was implemented using secured bait stations, along with a full exterior inspection to identify potential entry vulnerabilities. Follow-up service focused on continued population reduction through ongoing exterior treatment.
Background / Property Context
The property is a detached two-storey home with mixed exterior finishes, including brick along the lower level and siding above. Surrounding yard areas included ground cover, stone walkways, and deck structures, all of which can provide shelter and travel routes for rodents.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported repeated sightings of rats on the exterior of the house, particularly within the yard areas, and was concerned about the potential for the activity to increase or lead to interior entry.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial visit, our technician, Shaohua, confirmed active rat presence on the exterior of the property. Inspection of the perimeter identified conditions consistent with rodent travel, including ground-level cover and foundation edges. Three exterior wall vents were observed without protective covers, presenting potential entry points if activity escalated.
Photos from the inspection show ground-level conditions around walkways, deck structures, and foundation edges, as well as a secured exterior bait station containing rodenticide.

Cause Analysis
Exterior rat activity was likely supported by accessible shelter and movement pathways around the foundation and landscaped areas. Unprotected wall vents increased the risk of rodents transitioning from exterior activity to potential interior access. Ongoing environmental pressure from surrounding properties can also contribute to sustained exterior populations.
Treatment / Removal
Exterior rat control was performed using large, weighted, tamper-proof bait stations placed around the perimeter of the property. Stations contained commercial-grade rodenticide and were positioned to target the exterior population while minimizing non-target access. All pest control work was completed by a licensed exterminator in accordance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidelines.
Exclusion & Repairs
An exterior exclusion inspection was completed during the first visit. Three wall vents were identified as candidates for sealing with galvanized steel vent covers. An exclusion quote was provided on site; however, no exclusion work was completed during these visits.
Outcome & Confirmation
Following the initial treatment, the customer elected to continue exterior rat control services into the following year. Ongoing exterior treatments were used to further reduce and manage the rat population on the property. No interior rat activity was reported during the service period.
Technician Notes
- Visit 1: Confirmed exterior rat activity. Installed multiple large, weighted tamper-proof bait stations around the exterior. Completed full exterior inspection and identified three unprotected wall vents.
- Visit 2: Continued exterior treatment as part of ongoing population management. Customer maintained exterior-only service to reduce recurring rat pressure.
