Mouse Control Case Study – Burlington

Job Overview

Location: Burlington, Ontario
Structure: Detached side-split home (1970s build) with brick foundation and upper-level siding
Problem: Active mouse infestation in the basement
Service: Interior and exterior mouse control
Visits: Four visits

Summary

We responded to a confirmed mouse infestation in a detached side-split home in Burlington. Live mice had been caught in basement traps prior to our involvement. Our team completed a multi-visit mouse control program consisting of inspection, interior and exterior baiting, and follow-up servicing. By the final visit, interior activity had stopped and no further signs of mice were reported.

Background / Property Context

The home is a 1970s-era side-split with a brick lower level and siding above. This style of construction commonly includes utility penetrations, sill plate transitions, and multiple elevation changes that can create rodent entry opportunities if gaps develop over time.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported repeated mouse captures in the basement and was concerned about ongoing activity inside the home.

Inspection & Findings

During the initial visit, we conducted a full exterior inspection to identify potential mouse entry points along the foundation and service penetrations. Interior areas of the basement were also inspected for signs of activity. Evidence consistent with an active mouse infestation was present, confirming the customer’s report.

Cause Analysis

Mice commonly enter homes through small exterior gaps around foundations, utility lines, and structural transitions. Seasonal foraging and shelter-seeking behavior can increase indoor activity once access is established. The age and construction style of the home increased the likelihood of small, hard-to-detect entry points.

Treatment / Removal

Mouse control was initiated during the first visit using tamper-resistant bait stations placed in areas of identified activity inside and outside the home. Additional exterior bait stations were installed to target exterior movement and reduce pressure on the structure. All rodent control work was performed by a licensed exterminator in accordance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidelines.

Follow-up visits focused on rebaiting and servicing both interior and exterior stations to maintain effectiveness over time.

Exclusion & Repairs

Exclusion options were discussed with the homeowner and a quote was provided following the inspection. No exclusion or repair work was completed during this service period.

Outcome & Confirmation

By the fourth visit, the homeowner reported no further interior mouse activity. Interior trapping was no longer producing captures, and overall activity levels had declined. Service concluded with confirmation that the infestation was under control.

Technician Notes

The service was completed over four visits between June and October with no weather-related limitations. Andrew handled the inspection, treatment setup, and follow-up servicing. Bait stations remained accessible and undisturbed throughout the service period, allowing consistent monitoring and rebaiting.
